Yeh...the Texas Mile is a hoot, but lacks the
panache of Bonneville Speed Week in August.
Bonneville was on my "bucket list," but it turned out to be mental masturbation. It was in direct opposition to another of my bucket-list items--my last new car.
When I bought my 350Z in 2004, it was fully intended to see me out (unless I total it in a HST event). I thought it would be the ideal car to run at Bonneville as a bone stock entry just so I could brag about running there. After talking with several guys who actually made the Bonneville scene, I found that you have to, literally, "throw away your car" afterwards because of salt corrosion. One guy pointed out that there is a reason there are so few cars in the Bonneville Speed Week Museum--they melt.
I may head down to Texas just to see if the 350Z speed limiter chip really works at 150mph--or (yeh!), I could get the chip reflashed and blow it up at 176mph (the mathematically determined top speed of the 350Z). But then what would I have left on my bucket list? No, we won't go there.
